2021-22 Year-in-Review

We can all be very proud of our accomplishments in over the 2021-22 season. Coming off of the “Covid” year, we did not miss a beat. Check out the year in review below (May 2021 – April 2022).

Committed Donations:

  • $6500 + $2000 from a WITU Friends Grant – Towards habitat improvement crew and a UTV (WI DNR – Lakewood)
  • $2000 – Towards habitat improvement crew (WI DNR – Antigo)
  • $1500 – Towards cost of interns
  • $1500 – To create an angler drive and parking area along the Ounce River (WI DNR – Ashland)
  • Total: $11,500 + $2000 Friends Grant for a grand total of $13,500

Habitat Work:

  • May 8th – Prairie River tree planting
  • June 5th– Lakewood fish hatchery clean-up day
  • June 19th – Beaver Creek angler access
  • July 17th – Thunder River angler access / in-water habitat structure placement
  • August 21st – Evergreen Creek brush bundling for stream side clearance and in-water habitat structure placement
  • Total: 5 Habitat Improvement Days – 547 volunteer hours (an average of 7.4 GBTU and 15.8 total volunteers / work day)

Education/Outreach:

  • Maintaining a Conservation Education Trail at the Northeast Wisconsin (NEW) Zoo
  • June 5th – Outagamie County Conservation Club Take-a-Kid-Fishing-Day
  • July 26th – Kids’ Fishing Day

Education – Trout-in-the-Classroom (TIC):

  • Funded $1500 for a TIC at Lombardi Middle School. GBTU BOD member, and Lombardi school teacher, Carla Zimmerman’s class ran the program. Thirty-one trout were stocked in Haller Creek
  • Funded $200 towards a TIC at Bay View Middle School

Fundraising:

  • February 17th – Held our first Conservation Banquet in 2 years (46th Annual), raising ~$27,000
  • Received donations to place on our GBTU store (hand-crafted bamboo fly rod, guided walleye trip)

Meetings:

  • Held 6 Board of Director / GBTU Leaders meetings
  • Held several Conservation Banquet Committee meetings
  • Held multiple Trout Educational Trail Committee meetings
  • Hosted 4 guest speakers

Veteran’s Service Programs:

  • November 2nd – For the first time in a year-and-a-half, brought our Veteran’s program back. Our veteran’s program meets every other Tuesday.

Diverse and Active Board of Directors and Leadership Chairs

  • Our Board of Directors and Leadership Positions are gender, race and age diverse.

Legislative:

  • We have a legislative chair who is connected to the state capital and keeps us informed on issues affecting our clean coldwater resources.

Total Volunteer Hours:

  • GBTU efforts contributed a total of 1974.5 volunteer hours in 2021-22. In April of 2022, Independentsector.org released it’s value of a volunteer hour at $29.95/hour. Given this figure our local conservation group donated $59,136.28 worth of volunteer effort. Check out the table below to see where these hours came from…
