Below is a summary of this year’s Kids Fishing Day from GBTU Board member and Education Chair, Dave Ostanek:
“With perfect weather after a mid-afternoon rain shower, we were able to have a perfect fishing event. The ponds were filled with fish and there were plenty of caring volunteers on hand to help and enjoy the smiles and excitement that came from our fishing kids each and every time they reeled one in. For some, this was their first time ever fishing, for others, it was great to see them again. Our Green Bay Chapter Trout Unlimited Kids Fishing Day with support from Brown County Health and Human Services PALS program, Green Bay Exchange Club, and the Brown County Izaak Walton League at the Izaak Walton ponds in Bellevue, was held on Monday, July 29.
We have held our Kids Fishing day for over 30 years which provides a great outdoor experience for disadvantaged youth to come to learn and practice fishing and enjoy a picnic meal with their families and volunteer mentors. This year we had 30 kids and 30 adult mentors that came out and fished from 4:00-6:30 pm, catching varieties of fish from bluegill to bass to perch. In between the fishing, our guests enjoyed a picnic dinner of hot dogs, beans, chips, water, soda, and cookies, supplied by the Green Bay Exchange Club.
Green Bay Trout Unlimited is fortunate to work with several people and organizations that help put on this successful event. We would like to thank the Izaak Walton League for the use of the ponds, poles and help setting up the date. Jenna Durkee and Judy Tilque of Brown County Health and Human Services led the charge in organizing the youth, families, and sponsors through the PALS program. Thanks also go out to Paris Larson and Kip Boucher of the Green Bay Exchange Club for coordinating and providing the dinner with Festival Foods. The bait and refreshments were provided by GBTU. Several GBTU members came out to help the young fisher folks with baiting, untangling and removing the catch. Thanks to the following GBTU members for coming out and lending a hand: Bruce and Judy Deuchert, Pam and Joe VanErman, Doug Siedl, Jon Ostanek, Adrian Meseberg, Lee Meyers, Jim VandenBranden, Dave Sladek, and Dave Ostanek.
Thanks to all for a wonderful event.”
